We recently had the great pleasure of meeting up with James Smith at his Meguro home to talk about his story, record collection and analogue sound set-up.

“I’ve been collecting records (and occasionally DJng) for 20 years, living in London, Manchester, and Tokyo, and have worked as a concert promoter for most of my professional career. Over the last 12 years in Japan I’ve worked on tours, events and festivals of all shapes and sizes, and have been lucky enough to promote shows of many artists close to my heart.”

“My record collection reflects my taste, i.e. all over the place….from golden era hip-hop to psychedelic rock, jazz to chicago house, ambient, 70s dub, disco, the list goes on…. My trusty Technics 1210 Mk2’s have been with me since the age of 16, with which I use Nagaoka DJ-03HD carts/needles, through an E&S DJR400 mixer. It sounds super clean and open which I like. This runs through a fairly modern British audio system, with an Arcam A39 amp and PMC Twenty5 22 speakers. I also have a Linn LP12 with a Goldring 1042 cartridge which is nice for pure listening sessions. Being at home more through 2020 gave me an excuse to pick up another hobby, production, which started with the new MPC (One) and is slowly / dangerously expanding from there.”

Thank you James, for taking the time to meet with us and let us into your lovely home.
